Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

What is the difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?: Both are sport forms of the fighting art of Jiu Jitsu. The rules for scoring points differ but the same basic skills are used in both sports. DOCS Gym members have access to classes up to 7 days per week and many members attend both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practices. You will learn take-downs, throwing techniques, foot-sweeps, strangle-holds and joint locks (submission holds are not allowed for kids) as well as respect, sportsmanship, self control, and self defense. Judo is an Olympic sport that emphasizes spectacular throwing techniques in addition to mat-work. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) also allows throwing techniques but tends to emphasize the “ground game” (mat-work). All classes are co-ed with an emphasis on safety. Try a free class!

Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition: Local contests are lots of fun for all ages and skill levels. Usually the entrance fee is only about $35 and you can compete in various divisions, from novice (white belt) all the way up to black belt (advanced). Kids and adults alike can win medals and trophies and will have an exciting experience that they never forget! Unlike many sports, NOBODY “SITS ON THE BENCH” in these contests. Everyone entering a contest will compete.

Mixed Martial Arts has become wildly popular throughout the world and this has brought many to DOCS Gym. MMA fans learn that most of the Martial Arts seen in Hollywood movies is unrealistic. They see that the “grappling” skills which are taught in Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu very often make the difference between winning and losing…nothing mystical about it! Many successful MMA fighters cross-train with Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at DOCS Gym.
